Full Project Details

Our role: The installation of 80,000m² of hard-floor conglomerate tiling, in addition to 102,000m² of Lytag No Fines with sand cement topping & Lytag Concrete screeding.

Terminal 5 Concourse A was the first contract awarded to Vetter UK by client BAA.

With an initial value of £8.2m, the project involved the installation of 80,000m² of hard-floor conglomerate tiling, as well as 90,000m² of lytag screeding with a sand-cement topping.

Vetter UK worked closely together with BAA over a two year period in order to secure the contract as one of the fit-out’s first tier suppliers.

On-site activities commenced in June 2005 and were completed in March 2008.  During this time up to 150 directly employed Polish and Portuguese operatives worked on site, who at peak were laying 3,500m² of screeding and 1,800m² of tiling per week.

The Fiore di Pesco and Grigio Carnica tiles from Quarella, Italy were bought by BAA through Domus and free-issued to Vetter UK to install with an enlarged team of predominantly Portuguese masons.  For the screeding works, Vetter UK recruited Polish screeding operatives after putting the prospective employees through a skills test in Krakow.

Over the three years the contract value grew to £22m with Vetter picking up additional works, including 15,000m² of lytag screed with a sand-cement topping for the retail units, 25,000m² of concrete wearing screed for the back of house areas, and 2,500 linear metres of concrete kerbing for the back of house baggage hall.

The terminal opened in March 2008.
